  • November continued the recent surge in online retail spending, up 19% on November last year.
  • November is typically the peak month for purchasing goods from overseas sites in time for Christmas, and this year online retail spending at offshore sites was very strong - up 21% on last November.
  • At local sites online sales were up 18% on last November, making it 12 consecutive months of double-digit growth.
  • Special event days, such as China’s Singles Day, showed strong uplifts in online spending by Kiwis.

November was a busy time for online sales, with Singles Day, Black Friday and Cyber Monday all falling within the
month.

Singles Day, a predominately Chinese event, happens every year on 11/11. Involved retailers heavily discount stock for one day only, and these businesses were reported to turn over billions of dollars. This year, New
Zealander’s increased their spending at online Chinese retailers by 36% on November 11, when compared with last year’s Singles Day. Electronics and Cosmetic/Pharmacy categories showed very strong growth rates.
